FAQ's

How does it work?

The Claritech water purification system uses copper-silver ionization to eliminate bacteria and viruses in water, by passing an electrical current through Copper and silver electrodes to create positively charged ions.

These positively charged ions are released into the water, where they interact with bacteria and viruses disrupting the cell wall, preventing them from reproducing.

The copper and silver ions remain in the water, providing a lasting antimicrobial effect and preventing recolonization.

What are the benefits of using a copper-silver ion system over traditional chlorine or salt systems?

Copper-silver ion systems offer a cleaner, safer, and more natural way to keep your pool or spa water sanitized. Unlike traditional chlorine or salt systems, which rely on harsh chemicals, ionization uses naturally occurring minerals to kill bacteria, viruses, and algae. This means:

Less chemical use – drastically reduces or eliminates the need for chlorine and other sanitizers

Gentler on skin, eyes, and hair – no more red eyes, dry skin, or that "chlorine smell"

Longer-lasting water quality – ions remain active in the water for extended periods

Better for the environment – fewer chemicals released into the air or drained into the ecosystem

Lower maintenance – more stable water chemistry means fewer adjustments and shock treatments

Overall, copper-silver ionization gives you clear, healthy water with less effort and fewer chemicals.

Is copper-silver ionization safe for my family and pets?

Yes — copper-silver ionization is completely safe for both people and pets when used properly. The system works by releasing tiny amounts of natural minerals (copper and silver) into the water, which effectively kill harmful bacteria, viruses, and algae. These minerals are present at levels well below health risk thresholds and are safe for skin contact and even accidental ingestion of pool water.

Unlike chlorine, copper and silver ions don’t cause skin irritation, red eyes, or strong chemical smells. That makes it a great choice for families with kids, people with sensitive skin, and pet owners who want a gentler, more natural alternative.

Are there any health risks associated with copper or silver in the water?

When maintained at proper levels, copper and silver in pool or spa water pose no health risks. In fact, both minerals are naturally occurring and have been safely used in water treatment for decades — even in hospitals and municipal water systems.

The key is proper system calibration. The copper and silver levels used for ionization are well below the limits set by health authorities (such as the World Health Organization and local water safety standards). At these levels:

Copper helps prevent algae growth but is not concentrated enough to be harmful.

Silver acts as a powerful disinfectant without irritating skin or eyes.

Overexposure is extremely rare and typically only happens if a system is misused or not maintained correctly — for example, if ion levels are allowed to rise too high. But with basic monitoring (usually just once a week), your system will keep everything within safe, effective limits.

Are copper-silver ion systems more environmentally friendly than chlorine?

Yes — copper-silver ion systems are significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional chlorine-based systems. Here’s why:

Fewer harmful chemicals: Ion systems drastically reduce or eliminate the need for chlorine, which can release toxic byproducts (like chloramines and trihalomethanes) into the air and water.

No chemical runoff: Because you’re using natural minerals instead of large amounts of synthetic chemicals, there’s less risk of harming plants, waterways, or wildlife when draining or backwashing your pool.

Longer-lasting water: Ionized water stays stable and clear for longer, which means fewer water changes and less waste.

Reduced energy use: Stable water chemistry means pumps and filters don’t need to work as hard, which can lead to lower power consumption.

By switching to a copper-silver ion system, you're choosing a cleaner, more sustainable way to enjoy your pool or spa — without compromising water quality.

How much does a copper-silver ion system cost to install and operate? Is it really cheaper than a chemical approach?

Installation price can vary based on who you choose to install the system, get in touch with your local pool or spa expert to get up to date pricing.

The operational cost of the Claritech system is very low. It only needs to run for 30 minutes a day for a 4-6 person spa. Being a 5 watt unit, the power usage is negligible.

While the upfront cost of a copper-silver ion system can be slightly higher than a basic chlorine setup, the ongoing operating costs are usually much lower. Here’s why:

Less chemical usage: You’ll reduce or even eliminate the need to buy chlorine, algaecides, and stabilizers — which can add up quickly, especially during summer.

Lower maintenance: Ion systems help stabilize water chemistry, so you’ll spend less on pH balancers, shock treatments, and other corrective chemicals.

Longer equipment life: Less chemical corrosion means longer life for pool equipment, covers, and surfaces — saving you money over time.

Energy savings: Cleaner water with fewer contaminants reduces strain on filters and pumps, lowering energy use.

In most cases, pool owners find that a copper-silver ion system pays for itself within the first 1–2 years due to the savings on chemicals and maintenance — all while enjoying clearer, more comfortable water.

How often do I need to maintain or service the system?

Copper-silver ion systems are very low maintenance compared to traditional chlorine setups. Here's what typical upkeep looks like:

Check ion levels once a week using a simple test kit or digital meter — similar to checking pH or chlorine in a regular pool.

Clean the electrodes every few months (depending on water hardness and usage) to ensure optimal performance. This is usually a quick wipe or light brush.

Replace electrodes every 1–3 years, depending on pool size and system usage. Most systems will alert you when it’s time.

That's it — no constant chemical dosing, no handling of harsh substances, and fewer trips to the pool store. With minimal effort, your system will keep your water clean, clear, and healthy year-round.

Can this system be retrofitted to my existing pool or spa?

Absolutely! Claritech systems are designed to be easily retrofitted to most existing pools and spas. The system can usually be installed directly into your existing filtration line with minimal disruption. No need to drain your pool, and works with most existing pump and filter setups.

If you're unsure whether your setup is compatible, we can assess your system and recommend the best ionizer model for your pool or spa size.

Does this system work with saltwater pools and spas?

Yes — copper-silver ion systems can be used with saltwater pools, and in many cases, they actually complement each other well. If you're currently using a saltwater chlorinator, adding an ionizer can allow you to reduce the amount of chlorine your system needs to produce, making the water gentler on your skin, eyes, and equipment.

Some pool owners even choose to turn off their salt chlorinator entirely and rely mostly on the ionization system for sanitation, using a small amount of non-chlorine shock or oxidizer as needed.

Before installing, it’s a good idea to:

Check that your existing equipment can be adjusted to lower chlorine output

Confirm that mineral levels (especially copper) stay balanced alongside salt

We’re happy to help you find the right setup based on your goals — whether that’s lowering chlorine use or switching away from it entirely.

How long does it last?

Under normal usage, we recommend replacing the electrodes every 2 years. There is a helpful error light on the unit to notify you when the electrodes need to be be replaced.

What happens if the system stops working?

If the system stops working, the error light will illuminate on the unit. Refer to the user manual for the proper steps for troubleshooting.

If you suspect your unit to be faulty, we offer a limited 2 year warranty on all purchases. Just get in touch to arrange a return and inspection of the unit.

Can I install the system myself, or do I need a professional?

Yes, you can definitely install the system yourself if you are a handy DIYer or have relatively good plumbing knowledge. We do recommend installation by a professional to ensure proper use of the unit, and no voidance of the warranty.
